heine – ii

Wenn zwei voneinander scheiden

Wenn zwei voneinander scheiden,
So geben sie sich die Händ,
Und fangen an zu weinen,
Und seufzen ohne End.

Wir haben nicht geweinet,
Wir seufzten nicht weh und Ach!
Die Tränen und die Seufzer,
Die kamen hintennach.

(When two, from each other, separate,
so they give themselves their hands
and they endlessly begin
to cry and sigh…

We did not cry,
we did not sigh in pain and, oh!
the tears and the sighs,
they came later on…)
